Description

Emily Carr University of Art + Design is a school of students, faculty, thinkers and makers unlike any other. Established in 1925, we are the only specialized, accredited, public, post-secondary university in British Columbia solely devoted to education and research in the creative sector and its associated knowledge economy. The Systems/Network Administrator maintains and supports the University’s network infrastructure including databases, monitoring, and security as well as planning and implementing projects related to same. The Systems/Network Administrator is responsible for providing Tier 2 technical support to all members of the University and provides backup support for other functions in Information Technology Services as needed. In addition, the Systems/Network Administrator provides supervisory direction for team members and evaluates their work as required.

Some Typical Duties:

  • Installs, maintains, and provides technical support for various services, such as databases, information systems (such as email, ERP integration, LDAP, etc.), and web applications within a virtual server environment. Ensures the security and integrity of information systems, communication channels, and data, including confidential and sensitive information. Implements controls related to spam, phishing, unauthorized access to servers and systems, firewalls, user accounts, domain administration and potential security vulnerabilities. Monitors security related logs and responds to identified issues. Manages the provisioning of accounts on selected systems.
  • Manages the selection, implementation, and support of core infrastructure components including servers, network storage, backup and recovery, firewalls, routers, switches, system monitoring (e.g. SNMP), core network services (DNS, DHCP, etc.) and VPN.
  • Monitors network, server, and system performance and availability, and proactively responds to issues that are identified.
  • Configures and administers servers and databases, including security patching, analyzing system logs, operating system updates, user account management, and monitoring performance and capacity.
  • Working with others in ITS, plans the future capacity requirements for the network and backend infrastructure, and provides input to the annual budgeting process in this regard.
  • Develops and improves processes and tools to improve system provisioning, maintenance and monitoring of servers and network equipment.
  • Collaborates with the IT Service Desk to provide Tier 2 support on network and server operational issues, email, security issues, and other technical matters.
  • Assists in data migrations, data validations, and error tracking, e.g. LDAP integrity, MySQL issues, etc.
  • Provides training or assistance to team members as required.
  • Provides day-to-day supervisory direction and coaching for team members on work activities and priorities, technical issues, development approaches and methods. Provides feedback on the quality of their deliverables. Matters of an evaluative, disciplinary, contract administration and interpretation nature are referred to the Manager.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of IT-related University policies.
  • Acts in a backup capacity during the absence of other ITS personnel.
  • Maintains documentation in wiki format for area issues.
  • Represents the work area at department and other area meetings as required.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field.
  • Minimum five years’ experience in a combination of network administration and system administration in an open source Linux environment.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Windows, Linux with VMware CentOS/RedHat environments.
  • Knowledge of IT security best practices, processes and tools.
  • Experience with managing databases (on prem and cloud) in a Microsoft environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Linux server configuration and maintenance.
  • Scripting experience with Python, Perl, or Bash.
  • Experience with automation and orchestration of new deployments and patching using tools such as Ansible, Puppet, or Chef.
  • In depth knowledge of Internet technologies (TCP/IP, NFS, DNS, Firewalls, etc.).
  • Knowledge of networking (VLANS, link aggregation, routing) and common network services (e.g. DNS, DHCP, CIFS, NFS).
  • Experience with networking fundamentals such as configuring routers, switches and firewalls.
  • Experience with Nessus scans, Nmap, SpamAssassin and Fail2ban is an asset.
  • Experience working in an ITIL-based service environment is an asset.
  • Proven abilities in IT system design.
  • Proven system and network diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
  • Familiarity with intrusion detection, DLP, and SIEM tools.
  • Excellent technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven supervisory skills with the ability to lead, encourage, and support.
  • Ability to work with considerable independence as well as working productively and supportively in a team environment.
  • Ability to keep current in area of expertise.
  • Ability to prioritize work between project assignments and support issues.
